The Derby Public Library COMING THIS SUMMER
READERS 2008 SUMMER READING PROGRAM Saddle up and come on down to the Derby Public Library to be part of the summer reading program along with the many other activities and events planned. Registration for the reading program begins JUNE 16th and children may start reporting on books read the week of June 23rd.
Program Overview: A folder will be created for each child when registering along with a journal which will be kept at the library. When reporting the titles of books read on forms available at the library, the children's room staff will record the information in the journal. Stop in each week to check your folder fro reading incentives, puzzle/activity sheets, coupons for our famous treasure chest and more! There will be weekly raffle prizes and everyone who reports on books that week will be eligible to win! All those who complete the reading program will be invited to attend an ice cream party on August 15th. Reading certificates will also be distributed along with a grand prize raffle. Participating in a summer reading program helps a child maintain the reading skills they have acquired during the school year and can motivate a reluctant reader. It is never too early to start being part of a reading program and begin a lifelong love of books. Pre-readers, which includes toddlers, preschoolers and children entering kindergarten, are welcome to participate in the reading program by having an adult or older sibling read to them each week. Children are encouraged to read the following total amount of books at their reading/grade level throughout the summer to complete the summer reading program and be eligible to attend the end of summer ice cream party.
Pre-readers (preschoolers - entering 1st grade) - 24 books Entering 2nd and 3rd grade - 6 books Entering 5th and 6th grade - 4 books Our goal this summer is to read 2,400 books! Watch the reading thermometer rise as we tally the amount of book reported each week. We invite children of all ages to share their creativity and draw pictures based on the books they have read to display in our "art gallery" this summer. Be sure to check out our "Wanted: Readers" bulletin board to see if you can recognize some of our guest readers who will be reading at our Story Times with Community readers program taking place every Wednesday morning at 10AM. Saddle up and make your way down to the Derby Public Library for a summer of reading fun with great events and activities along the way!
